Decarbonising underwriting portfolios poses unique challenges, the biggest of which is finding mechanisms by which insurers can influence the activities of the insured, requiring new ways of thinking, according to a recent white paper by Gallagher Re.

The paper, entitled Decarbonizing Underwriting Portfolios, highlighted that the traditional method of offering reduced premiums to incentivise client behaviour may be less effective or appropriate for tackling emissions.
