North P&I and Standard Club have entered formal discussions for a merger that would create one of the largest mutual marine insurers in the world.

The combination of the two P&I clubs – both members of the International Group (IG) – will create a mutual insurer providing coverage for vessels equivalent to 400 million gross tonnes.
