The Hartford takes Generali’s Mather in financial lines team rebuild

Generali’s head of UK finpro Keith Mather has resigned to take up a senior position in the financial lines team at The Hartford in London, which has had a recent exodus of staff, Insurance Insider can reveal.

Mather has worked for Generali since October 2020, according to his LinkedIn profile, following an 18-year stint at Liberty International Underwriters.

He has also worked as an underwriter at AIG during his 30-year career, after starting out working in broking.

His appointment at The Hartford follows a period of staffing turmoil in its London financial lines operation, amid heightened personnel movement across the sector.

Recent resignations include head of international lines David Robinson, who is set to take up a senior business management role at Optio Group.

Both Steve Pearsall and David Mulvaney are also leaving the business to rebuild Hiscox’s D&O team.

Paul Shore left in November of last year to launch Tegron Specialty, one of the start-ups to have launched into the D&O market in the past year to capitalise on hard market conditions.

The Hartford had hired Mitch McBain to lead its management liability team, but, before arriving at the business, he took up a counter offer to lead the D&O team at Ascot Bermuda.

The string of start-ups to have entered the D&O market in the past year – including Inigo, Rising Edge and IQUW – has led to a heightened competition to secure underwriting talent.

The Hartford and Generali were contacted for comment.
