The announcement on Monday from Aon and Willis Towers Watson that they have abandoned their $30bn mega-merger has plunged the future of Willis Re into even deeper uncertainty as its sale to AJ Gallagher is upended.

Aon’s $3.6bn sale to Gallagher of assets including Willis Re, as well as various other divestitures, was designed to counter regulators’ concerns about antitrust, but the Department of Justice (DoJ) is evidently unsatisfied.
