Elsa has strengthened to a Category 1 hurricane ahead of landfall on west coast of Florida, become the first hurricane to make landfall so far this year.

Authorities in Florida have issued warnings, as Elsa begins to skim Tampa Bay, Clearwater and the St Pete's Beach area with rainfall between 3 and 5 feet, and winds between 75 and 95 miles per hour.
