Widespread misunderstanding across UK boardrooms about the operation of D&O coverage could leave directors facing legal expenses running into the millions of pounds, according to research from McGill and Partners.

A survey by the broker found that a mere 17% of directors understand what happens to their D&O cover when they leave a role, and less than 30% comprehend the impact a company merger has on their cover.
