News in brief

Kiln sets up marine operation in Germany

Lloyd's insurer Kiln has opened its first German office in Frankfurt under the leadership of former Ace underwriter Marcus Zapfe.

The new operation will focus on marine insurance, with a particular emphasis on a number of sub-classes in which Kiln has expertise and can offer high levels of capacity.

Zapfe and his team will be given full underwriting and claims authority by Kiln's Lloyd's syndicates.

Zapfe has over 20 years of experience in the insurance industry, most recently with Ace as regional marine underwriting manager for Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

Last year, Kiln demonstrated its intent to build up a continental footprint by establishing an office in Paris.

Litmus sees strong demand

Start-up ratings analysis service Litmus Analysis has signed its first client and is pursuing a number of further discussions on new business.

After launching shortly before the Monte Carlo Rendez-Vous, Litmus now has two analysts signed up and is seeing interest from brokers and (re)insurers in a variety of regions.

As first revealed by The Insurance Insider, Peter Hughes, a former vice president in Standard & Poor's (S&P) London, launched the new company at the end of August to offer ratings analysis services to reinsurance buyers.
