Bains in early stages of underwriting start-up

Volante founder and former CEO Talbir Bains is in the early stages of a new underwriting entity, Insurance Insider can reveal.

Sources told this publication Bains has engaged in talks with various professional advisers and potential staff but that, at this stage, no mandates have been given, and no talent has been hired.

‘Lost’ Russian aircraft claims to fall on aviation war insurers

Judgment has been handed down by the UK High Court over jets retained in Russia since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, with lessors to make recoveries from aviation war insurers.

A key issue of the 12-week ‘mega trial’ was as to whether the aircraft had been lost to the claimants – and, if so, what caused such a loss, and when.

Fidelis ‘respectfully disagrees’ with aviation ruling, considers appeal

Fidelis Insurance Group has said it is “disappointed by and respectfully disagrees” with the English High Court’s judgment that aviation war insurers will be liable for recoveries from claimants in relation to the Russian aircraft lessor ‘mega-trial’.

In an SEC filing in response to the ruling, Fidelis said it will be reviewing all options, including a possible appeal.

Samsung ups equity stake in Canopius to 40%

Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance has entered into an agreement with Canopius Group to purchase an additional 21% equity stake, bringing its shareholding to 40%.

The stake in Canopius has been purchased from existing shareholders Fidentia Fortuna, led by US PE firm Centerbridge Partners.

United Risk names regional CEO

Hayden Smith has been named regional CEO for United Risk. He will oversee the company's EU, UK and British Commonwealth business and manage further expansion in those territories and other emerging markets.

Smith joined United Risk as a managing partner in January 2023, leading efforts to develop the company's international (non-US) platform. He will be based in London.
