Shock departures from the Net-Zero Insurance Alliance (NZIA) by Munich Re and Zurich have cast a shadow over the alliance’s future, while revealing how an ESG culture war in certain US states is creating credible antitrust risks for insurers collaborating on the net-zero transition.

Some executives suggested this was the start of an unravelling of the alliance, but others noted it had been business as usual for work on the NZIA’s target protocols since the departures.
