Capital drop boosts underlying reinsurer returns in 2022: Gallagher Re

Underlying reinsurer returns improved notably in 2022 to outpace the cost of capital for the first time in the past decade – albeit this was boosted by the sector’s shrinking capital base as a result of investment mark-to-market losses, according to Gallagher Re.

Global reinsurance capital declined by 12% in 2022 to $638bn due to the declining value of investments, the broker calculated in its most recent reinsurance market report.
