A powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck southern Turkey and northern Syria at 04:00 local time today, killing at least 641 people and wounding thousands, and destroying at least 1,500 buildings, according to media reports.

The $2bn+ reinsurance programme for the Turkish earthquake state scheme will be one of the main points of exposure that the London market is closely watching after the major disaster.
