A confluence of factors, including global cat activity, inflation and continent-wide economic uncertainty, are combining with historic underpricing to create a “tough” renewal period for European cedants renewing cat programmes on 1 January.

As the Baden-Baden reinsurance conference gets underway, it has become increasingly clear in the past few weeks that reinsurers expect rate increases even on loss-free property programmes, while brokers are warning cedants to be “realistic” about pricing and structures.
