Universal policyholders have filed around 18,000 claims thus far related to Hurricane Ian, roughly half of what it received during the corresponding period for Hurricane Irma.

The insurer estimates that its overall gross loss will be approximately $1bn, below its $3bn overall reinsurance tower. The gross Ian loss is around two-thirds of the gross Irma loss Universal was reporting by late 2020.
