Typhoon Nanmadol made landfall near the city of Kagoshima today, having been downgraded from “super typhoon” status ahead of landfall but still striking as one of the strongest storms ever to hit Japan.

Local news reports have so far mentioned limited specific damages, but the storm is wreaking heavy rain on the area as millions have been told to evacuate to shelters.
