Spain has secured backing from Europe’s most senior court in a long-running legal battle with the London P&I Club over a 2002 oil spill.

The Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) ruled today that proceedings initiated in the UK cannot block the recognition of a Spanish judgment that ordered the insurer to pay compensation for damage caused by the oil spill.
