The Insurance Council of Australia (ICA) has declared an insurance catastrophe for Southeast Queensland, which has been beset by severe weather and flooding since 21 February, with Australian insurer Suncorp pegging the current losses at $75mn.

With the declaration, insurers will prioritise claims made by affected policyholders, and claims will be triaged to direct urgent assistance to the worst-affected property owners.
