Nat cat losses last year reached $116bn – 63% above the 10-year average of $71bn – boosted by a series of extreme weather events in the US and the second-worst flooding on record in Europe.

Tropical cyclones were the most damaging type of event overall and accounted for 35% of the headline loss figure, with severe thunderstorms the second-most costly category at 25%.
