The underwriter joined Hiscox in 2020, leading one of the carrier’s best performing teams through a period of strong rating and profit growth.
During his career in the marine market, Southgate held a number of senior underwriting positions, including head of marine and energy at Canopius, as well as roles at Sturge Syndicate, Aon, Swiss Re, and Montpellier Syndicate.
“Mike has made a significant contribution to the insurance industry and will be deeply missed by his colleagues and friends,” Hiscox said in a statement.
“Our thoughts are with his family at this difficult time and we offer them our heartfelt condolences.”
