Mosaic launches UK transaction liability team and grows US M&A group

Mosaic has launched a transactional liability team in the UK as well as expanding its US M&A unit as it looks to benefit from accelerating global deal activity.

In London, the start-up has appointed Sam Whiteman and Andrew Gofton-Salmond to establish an international transactional liability unit.

Whiteman, who joins as head of international transactional liability, was previously head of London and emerging markets at Liberty Mutual.

Initially focusing on the UK, Europe, the Middle East and Africa, he will report to global head of transactional liability William Monat, who was appointed in April.

Gofton-Salmond joins as manager of transactional liability. He was previously a senior underwriter focusing on M&A deals across the UK, Europe and emerging markets at AIG.

Mosaic co-CEO Mark Wheeler said: “Transactional liability is a core focus of our model and growth strategy, and a product line we expect to grow exponentially, in North America and beyond.

“The fast-paced development of our M&A platform, first in the US and now ramping up in London, serves the rising needs of clients in an unprecedented environment.”

Monat added: “Economic conditions are driving heavy deal volume and value, and insurance coverage has become vital to help buyers and sellers achieve timely closures.

“To meet that robust demand with specialized underwriting, we plan to add another dozen specialists by the end of next year.”

Mosaic launched its North American transactional liability unit in May with the appointment of Stavan Desai as team leader and Katherine Spenner as chief legal officer.

Since then, the carrier has hired 16 specialists, most of whom are based in New York.

These include Hannah Burnham, previously a senior vice president at Atlantic Global Risk; Edward Norton, formerly vice president at Berkley Transactional; Robert Browne, previously a forensic accountant at KPMG; and Brian Howton, formerly an associate at law firm Weil, Gotshal & Manges.

The business has also hired Casey Olden, another former lawyer at Golenbock Eiseman Assor Bell & Peskoe; Shannon Westerlind, previously at Cravath, Swaine & Moore; and Matteo Maroun, who used to be a senior analyst within AIG’s M&A group.

Other hires to the New York transactional liability team include legal analysts Tamar Katamadze and analysts Griffin Genet, Yuqi Lin, Justin Wong, and Vivian Ye.
