Aviva takes Arch’s McGurk in latest D&O market move

D&O class underwriter at Arch Sarah McGurk has resigned to take up an underwriting role at Aviva, Insurance Insider can reveal.

McGurk joined Barbican in 2018, staying with the business when it was acquired by Arch in November 2019.

Prior to that she was a D&O underwriter at The Standard Syndicate, which was placed into run off in 2018.

She has also worked at Travelers, after beginning her career in broking.

The move is the latest to emerge in the D&O sector, which has seen a huge amount of staff displacement after an upheaval of underwriting conditions.

The sector underwent dramatic hardening throughout 2020 as underwriters sought to address bulging prior-year claims and the threat of further losses from Covid-19.

Several major players exited the market, but capacity constraints have recently been eased by a slew of new entrants, including IQUW, Inigo, Rising Edge and Tegron Specialty.

Other recent moves in the D&O space include Tegron’s appointment of Kiran Shergill and MGA Wimsure’s hire of Hans Sherman.

An Aviva spokesperson said: “Sarah has a strong and deep underwriting and legal expertise in the management liability sector and we’re excited about her joining our management liability team in January.

“Her appointment will not only strengthen our ability to provide a first-class service to clients and brokers, but also demonstrates Aviva’s ability to attract such high-quality additions to our expanding financial lines team.”

Arch declined to comment.
