AIG appoints Allianz’s Smith as new UK head of construction
Paul Smith has started his new role as UK head of construction at AIG, following Gerald McDowell's retirement after more than 40 years in construction underwriting.
Prior the appointment, Smith was construction leader at Allianz Global Corporate & Specialty, a role he held for almost two decades.
This publication revealed back in April that McDowell was set to retire imminently after nearly 16 years as AIG’s previous UK construction head.
McDowell joined AIG in 2005 as UK construction manager and before that worked at RSA for nearly 27 years.
Smith's appointment comes amid a surge of recruitment activity in construction across underwriters and brokers.
Jensten Group recently expanded its wholesale division’s liability and construction operation with two appointments at its subsidiaries.
Paul Snashall joined Senior Wright as liability and construction placing broker, while Stuart Daffin joined City Underwriters as senior construction underwriter.
Howden recently announced the appointment of 19 construction specialists to its team in London and Dubai, one of which was David Lyle as deputy head of UK contractors, as originally revealed by this publication.
AIG declined to comment on Smith’s appointment.
