EU seeks to free up EUR90bn of capital in Solvency II review

Proposed changes to the EU Solvency II regime are expected to free up EUR90bn ($105bn) of capital in the short term for the insurance sector.

The European Commission has tabled a number of proposals designed to incentivise long-term investment by insurance companies.

The Commission noted that the financial position of insurers was not significantly affected by the pandemic and remained well capitalised.
