Sompo hires Everest’s Stanley for financial institutions role

Everest financial lines underwriter Gavin Stanley is leaving the business to take up an underwriting position in the financial institutions team at Sompo International in London, Insurance Insider has learned.

Stanley joined Everest at the beginning of last year from Barbican, where he was head of financial lines, having been one of several underwriters to have exited the business after it was taken over by Arch at the end of 2019.

He had worked at Barbican for more than nine years, first as an underwriting manager for financial institutions, before being made head of financial lines in 2019, according to his LinkedIn profile.

The move is the latest in a series of staffing changes in the financial lines market, which has seen major upheaval in the past 18 months.

Major markets have withdrawn from the sector in the past year following poor loss activity, whilst others without a legacy have moved in to capitalise on surging rates.

Recent new entrants to the market include Tegron Specialty, IQUW and Convex.

Sompo International has recently changed its financial lines leadership team in Bermuda, promoting Sarah Spurling to lead the division following the retirement of Forbes Geekie.

Sompo International declined to comment. Everest did not respond for a request to comment.
