Through persistent rumours over the last few months that Axa has been preparing to sell its reinsurance business, my sceptical response to sources has always been, “What business?”

I did not say this to denigrate the quality of the franchise or the management team – only to make the point that reinsurance at Axa XL is not organised as a standalone entity that could be readily sold.
