Big is beautiful: Swiss Re wins award

Swiss Re’s landmark London offices – affectionately known as The (Erotic) Gherkin – has been awarded the UK’s premier architectural award, the Stirling Prize.

The prize of £20,000 will, however, do little to defray the cost of the building’s lack of occupants. According to suggestions last month, the reinsurer’s failure to find tenants for the top half of the building is costing the firm £35,000 per week. In contrast, nearby development Plantation House is thought to be almost fully let despite being more expensive than the £47.50 per square foot available at Swiss Re’s building.
