Chaucer shuffles pack

Lloyd's insurer Chaucer Syndicates Limited announced on 15 December 2005 the appointment of two new directors, and an active underwriter.

The agency's third party syndicate management activities will now be led by Janet Helson, who joined Chaucer in December 2003. She had spent the previous sixteen years underwriting for Kiln in the Lloyd's market.

Gina Butterworth has taken on responsibility for Chaucer's business-wide risk management programme as the management team's risk officer. Before joining Chaucer as a risk manager in 2004, Butterworth assumed a similar role for XL Insurance.

"We are delighted to have Janet and Gina as part of the Chaucer management team. These roles are important to the continued success of the agency," said Chaucer chief executive Ewen Gilmour.

The insurer also announced Bruce Bartell as active underwriter for Syndicate 1084 for the 2006 year of account.

Bartell worked for fifteen years in the London market before joining Chaucer in 1988 as active underwriter of Syndicate 1117. He has also operated under the same title for Syndicate 1096 (merging into Syndicate 1084 in 2003).

The move follows the stepping-down of Hugh Hayward from the position. Hayward, who retires in 2007, will continue to support Bartell while concentrating on the Syndicate's marine division.

Gilmour added: "Hugh has played an important role in the history of Chaucer, through his continued astute stewardship of Syndicate 1084 and his wise counsel on the Board. We are extremely pleased that Chaucer will continue to benefit from Hugh's expertise during the next two years."
