Markel lures back Richardson

Greg Richardson has become acting head of retro property reinsurance at Markel Global Reinsurance, just three months after leaving Alterra when it was acquired by Markel.

Richardson will be responsible for underwriting retro property business for both Markel and the New Point sidecar, the firm announced.

He was previously executive vice president for underwriting strategy and risk analytics at Alterra and had been involved in setting up the New Point vehicles.

Richardson was one of a number of senior Alterra executives to leave after Markel closed the acquisition. Before that he had worked for Harbor Point Re, which merged into Alterra.

He will replace Markel's former head of retro Martin Vezina, who moved to AQR Re this month as the collateralised reinsurer expands its operations in Bermuda.

Vezina had been with Alterra since 2005.
