QBE Europe makes wholesale changes as re-jig nears end

QBE European Operations is set to announce a raft of hires, promotions and reorganisations as it continues major restructuring under CEO Richard Pryce, The Insurance Insider revealed earlier today (20 October).

As a significant part of the move Mike Reid has joined as head of international casualty, a memo seen by this publication has confirmed.

The experienced senior underwriter joins QBE from Brit, where he was divisional director of its specialist liability team. Prior to Brit, the executive held senior positions at Ace.

The firm also announced a major reorganisation of its retail operations, which entails the creation of three operating units: corporate and large commercial; middle market, including commercial combined; and SME.

The Insurance Insider revealed that as a result of the reorganisation the firm has parted company with UK national general manager Elliot Miller, regional broker manager George Maxwell, London national commercial manager Paul Scott, London regional manager Richard Beaumont and London property manager Adrian Ballardie.

The departing executives follow director of property Peter Fice, whose exit was confirmed earlier in the month.

Correspondingly, Matthew Crane is to be appointed director of middle market and SME, Amanda Doran is appointed head of commercial combined and Dave Greaves is appointed head of SME.

The group is also to amalgamate its property and political risks portfolios and Nicky Ablett has been appointed director of the new merged division.

QBE announced that Paula Mackenzie is joining the international casualty team in January 2015 as a senior underwriter. Mackenzie joins from Aegis, where she was international casualty underwriter.

In addition, the company announced a number of promotions within its international casualty team. From 1 January 2015 Charlie Harcus will become portfolio manager for Latin America and Anthony Wright will become portfolio manager for rest of the world. Meanwhile, Nick Gilkes is promoted to senior underwriter.

Sarah Yuile, general liability underwriter in QBE's Toronto office, will be joining the London-based Canadian and Middle East general liability team on a long-term secondment.

Following Ablett's appointment, Paul Dobson is to be promoted to portfolio manager, political risks.

The company also announced that Ian McAllister has been hired from Ace Global Markets and will be shortly be joining as portfolio manager, international property binders.

Finally, in QBE's energy division Duncan Wilson has been promoted to the new role of head of oil and gas, while Sebastian Weaver is also promoted to senior underwriter offshore oil and gas.

QBE Europe has endured a string of high-profile exits during the last 18 months, as Richard Pryce has set about restructuring the business into separate retail and wholesale divisions.
