Talbot global head of marine and energy James McDonald is to join Sompo International to lead its upstream energy business, The Insurance Insider can reveal.

McDonald started his career as an energy insurance broker at Sedgwick, before working his way up to become head of marine and energy in 1990 and then moving to underwriting in 1998.

He worked as an energy underwriter at Goshawk Syndicate and Cotesworth Syndicate before becoming global head of marine and energy at Talbot in 2001.

McDonald is member of the Lloyd’s Market Association’s marine committee and its joint rig committee. In addition, he is chairman of the offshore energy technical committee, which is part of the International Union of Marine Insurance.

Tom Houston, who was formerly head of energy and senior vice president at Sompo International, recently left the business to join Convex, the start-up led by Stephen Catlin and Paul Brand.

Talbot is owned by AIG, which acquired its parent company Validus for $5.56bn last year.

Talbot has recently retreated from Lloyd’s China and Australia to centralise its underwriting at a central Singapore hub, and has also exited its Dubai business and pulled out of construction in the past year.

It was not immediately clear how soon McDonald would take up the post of upstream energy head at Talbot.

The company declined to comment and Sompo International representatives did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
