Brit is to exit the US criminal justice insurance market amid a wider retrenchment in the Brit Global Specialty USA (BGSU) business, The Insurance Insider understands.
Senior vice president Mike Davis is set to retire, but his departure is understood to be unrelated to the decision to exit the class.
The other US criminal justice team members are to leave or move to other parts of the company.
The criminal justice and social services underwriting team was based in Scottsdale, Arizona and insured prisons, detention facilities, rehabilitation centres and security training businesses.
As The Insurance Insider reported earlier this week, Brit is downsizing its US specialty operations, with team exits in inland marine, yacht and Latin American business.
Brit has also closed its Miami office, where Latin American property facultative reinsurance, casualty and engineering business were written.
Brit confirmed the exit from US criminal justice market and pointed to previous statements given to this publication outlining the rationale behind the decision to scale back in the US market.
“The decision to cease participation in certain classes reflects BGSU’s objective to continue its successful growth through a renewed focus on core lines where it identifies the most significant opportunities to build scale and generate sustainable and profitable returns,” the statement said.
“[BGSU] has established a strong reputation for entrepreneurial expertise, market-leading service and product range and represents a critical component of Brit’s distribution strategy.”
