Lewis Goodearl, head of UK and London market wholesale liability for Axa XL, has resigned to join the casualty team at Convex, The Insurance Insider understands.

At Convex he will be working under former Axa XL colleague Dan Curran, who will assume the role of head of casualty insurance at the start-up.

As this publication reported earlier this week, Hiscox general liability line underwriter Nick Waddell is also to join Curran’s casualty team.

According to his LinkedIn profile, Goodearl has held the role of head of UK and London market wholesale liability at Axa XL since September last year.

At legacy XL, he was chief underwriting officer for UK middle markets for five years. Prior to that he also held roles at Liberty and Ace.

Founders Stephen Catlin and Paul Brand have rapidly assembled an executive and underwriting team for Convex.

Sources have suggested that, by year end, Convex expects to have recruited more than 100 staff, and will take three to five floors in the Scalpel as an additional show of intent to position itself as a destination for EC3’s premier underwriting talent.

It has already hired senior underwriting staff across lines including property treaty, casualty treaty, property direct and facultative, casualty insurance, aviation, upstream energy, marine, terrorism, engineering, bloodstock and healthcare.

Convex and Axa XL declined to comment.
