NFP continues FI growth with Sheffield hire

NFP has continued its recent build out with the addition of Tom Sheffield to its growing financial institutions and private equity teams, The Insurance Insider can reveal.

Sheffield moves to NFP after serving as head of specialty claims at QBE North America. Sources said that he will be given the role of chief legal officer for NFP’s financial institutions team. Sheffield will also support the broker’s further expansion into the financial institutions and private equity markets.

With Sheffield joining NFP, The Insurance Insider understands he and fellow recent arrival Mark Flippen will now look to launch a new InsurTech-focused managing general agent platform argeting financial institutions and private equity firms. It is understood the new MGA will have the support of various US carriers and Lloyd’s syndicates.

The latest arrival brings more than 20 years of industry experience to NFP. In addition to QBE North America, Sheffield has also worked for Aon in London as well as Marsh’s Finpro centre of excellence. His career also includes extensive experience working in private practice litigation.

Sheffield moves to NFP almost a month after the broker brought in Flippen from Marsh JLT Specialty to lead its financial institutions platform.

Flippen had been a senior vice president within Marsh JLT Specialty’s financial institutions team but, as this publication revealed last month, he made the switch to NFP in late July. Natasha Kiemnec, who had worked with Flippen in Marsh JLT Specialty’s financial institutions team, also made the move to NFP.

At JLT, Flippen is understood to have built up a portfolio numbering well over 100 clients.

NFP, which is addition to its US offices has operations in the UK, Canada and Puerto Rico, has been busy building out its operations in recent months.

On top of the hires of Sheffield, Flippen and Kiemnec, NFP has also brought in John McNally to lead its mergers and acquisitions insurance practice.

McNally joined fellow M&A insurance specialists Andrew Pelzer, Vipul Kumar and Mike Sharkey who made the same move back in June.

Those arrivals were hot on the heels of NFP’s hiring of Doug Turk as regional managing director of property and casualty, West region. Turk had previously been chief marketing officer for JLT Group.

In addition to these appointments, NFP has added to its US real estate and property teams with the arrival of 13 staff from the former JLT Group.
