Marsh promotes Smith to head UK aviation practice

Marsh-JLT Specialty has named Andy Smith as chairman and CEO of its UK aerospace and aviation practice, The Insurance Insider can reveal.

He effectively replaces Mark Costin, who resigned from Marsh-JLT Specialty earlier this year to join BGC Partners’ new standalone aerospace operation where former Marsh global aviation CEO Marcel Chad is part of the management team.

Smith will report to Simon Harker, who remains in place as global chairman and CEO of Marsh’s aviation and aerospace practice.

The promotion follows several high-profile departures from Marsh-JLT Specialty to BGC, including Oyin Heath and Bruce Fine.

The reshuffle comes as the aviation broking space passes through a period of intense flux as start-ups BGC and McGill &Partners look to disrupt the dominance of the likes of Marsh, Willis Towers Watson and AJ Gallagher.

McGill &Partners has signalled a desire to secure a position within the aviation market by bringing in former JLT aviation chief Joe Trotti. It has followed that hire with a series of others including Willis Towers Watson alumni Jeremy Kinsey, Giles Wilkinson, Ian Savill and James Camp-Harris.

Rates in the airline market are currently surging by around 20-25 percent following a spate of claims, primarily relating to issues with Boeing 737 Max jets and years of under-pricing.

Marsh declined to comment.
