Lloyd & Partners’ senior partner and head of marine David Smith is to join broking start-up McGill & Partners, The Insurance Insider can reveal.
It is understood that Smith will work as a partner in the marine and cargo team at McGill & Partners after leaving the Marsh & McLennan Companies (MMC)-owned broker.
Smith is one of a series of senior brokers to leave legacy JLT since the company was acquired by MMC in a £4.9bn ($6.1bn) deal in April. Lloyd & Partners became part of the then-JLT Specialty through a January 2015 merger.
He is in charge of the marine broking operation at Lloyd & Partners, including hull, protection and indemnity, and liability business on a worldwide basis.
Lloyd & Partners was founded by John Lloyd, who is also set to join McGill & Partners in early October as chairman.
Before joining Lloyd & Partners in 2014, Smith worked for over 15 years at Lloyd’s broker Besso, where he was a managing director of the marine division and a board director, according to LinkedIn.
McGill & Partners and MMC both declined to comment.
