Zurich has estimated a relatively modest loss from the Chile earthquake at $200mn, reinforcing expectations that the reinsurance industry will take the brunt of the hit.
Although in absolute terms the estimate is the eighth-largest reported so far from the (re)insurance industry, the figure is only a small portion of the company's shareholder funds at less than 1 percent.
International business represents a small part of the Swiss-headquartered company's premiums, accounting for less than 10 percent written in 2009.
