The US crop insurance model is under threat from proposed changes to legislation that could slash expected profits for reinsurers and drive them away from participating in the business.
That is the warning from reinsurance broker Aon Benfield, which has calculated that reinsurers' expected profit from writing the business could plunge between 20 and 30 percent under current proposals due to come into effect for the 2011 crop insurance year.
