A capital fightback

A year on from surveying the wreckage of a capital base mangled by investment losses, Ike and a deluge of other financial blows, (re)insurers can reflect on a dramatic recovery where many have done more than claw back the ground they lost in 2008.

As data compiled by The Insurance Insider reveals (see chart below), the aggregate shareholders' funds of 32 US, Bermudian and European (re)insurers rose 25.5 percent from 1 January 2009 to 31 December 2009...
