The fledgling microinsurance market could be worth $40bn when it grows to maturity, according to research from Swiss Re.
The reinsurer's latest Sigma report estimates that the 1.4bn people in the world who live on less than $1.25 a day could yield annual insurance premiums of $7bn if they receive sufficient support from government and aid agencies.
It also forecasts annual premium revenues of up to $33bn from the 2.6bn people who earn between $1.25 and $4 per day.
