Privately held Bermudian reinsurer Ariel Re has posted a $7.6mn loss for the third quarter - its first negative result of 2011 - but remains in the black for the year with a $27.2mn profit for the first nine months.
Ariel reserved $76.3mn in loss estimates over the third quarter to take its nine-month claims bill to $237.9mn. Earlier this year, the reinsurer warned that it expected a net $35mn-$50mn hit from first quarter losses.
