Insured losses from natural catastrophes and manmade disasters total $36bn in 2010 so far - up 34 percent on last year - according to Swiss Re's sigma team.
But the increase in claims for insurers is far-outstripped by wider economic losses, with that overall figure more than tripling from $63bn to $222bn year-on-year as a series of disasters brought the highest cost of life from such events since 1976.
