New York-listed reinsurers have followed their peers in London and continental Europe by suffering sharp share price falls as the New York Stock Exchange opened.
In the early hours of trading "Bermudian" stocks fell by an average of 3.5 percent, with US-based insurers subject to more moderate weakening.
As the day has progressed in the UK and in continental Europe, traders have taken an increasingly gloomy view of the likely consequences of today's (11 March) Japanese earthquake.
