William Gray's team at Colorado State University confirmed its December long-range forecast of an above-average year for hurricane activity in the Atlantic basin.
The forecast centre report notes that precursor factors to this year had a number of similarities to early April conditions that preceded the hurricane years of 1958, 1966, 1969, 1998 and 2005.
All five of these seasons had above-average activity, notably 2005, which was the most active on record.
