The accent - an obvious linguistic hybrid of home country and adopted land - has been described as unforgettable, even impenetrable; his height has engendered decades of sometimes-derisive comment. Both, of course, are integral elements in a compelling legend, the first chapter of which unfolded deep within a cauldron of Roman Catholicism and casual brutality.
