Cyclone Phailin hammers east India

Cyclone Phailin caused "extensive" damage when it hit the east Indian state of Orissa as a Category 4 storm on Saturday (12 October), risk modelling firm RMS said.

Heavy winds and storm surges washed away up to 10,000 homes and caused heavy disruption to power, communications and transport, it added.

However, the firm said that the death toll from the storm has been low thanks to large-scale mandatory evacuations, while local reports indicate that Bhubaneshwar, Orissa's state capital, escaped serious...
