Cooper Gay has overtaken Towers Watson as the fourth-largest reinsurance broker - even before its merger with US wholesaler Swett & Crawford.
The Toby Esser-led outfit increased its brokerage in 2009 to $162mn, overhauling Towers Watson, which booked brokerage of $156mn.
Cooper Gay's growth was fuelled by the acquisition of Argentinean reinsurance broker Reinsurance.com.ar, the acquisition of a minority interest in the company's Brazilian subsidiary and by an expansion of its US operations.
