Japan, still reeling from the billions of dollars of economic damage caused by the Great Tohoku earthquake in March, has largely escaped fresh disaster after a landfalling category 2 storm caused only modest losses.
Total insured losses from Typhoon Roke will be between $150mn (12bn yen) and $600mn (46bn yen), according to modelling firm AIR Worldwide.
Roke, the 15th named storm of the Northwest Pacific typhoon season, made landfall near Japan's Hamamatsu city in Shizuoka prefecture on 21 September.
