P&C earnings outlook boosted by low cats, rising rates

Low catastrophe losses and an improving rate environment should bolster P&C (re)insurers' Q1 earnings, analysts said in recent sector previews, while share prices continue to be buoyed by M&A activity.

Ahead of the Q1 earnings season, which starts next week, Barclays analyst Jay Gelb noted that the outlook "appears decent for commercial (re)insurers with stabilising pricing which might show improvement as 2018 progresses".
