A marked uptick in tropical storm activity occurred right on cue
last week with the approach of September.
The month is historically the most active for storm activity with
47 percent of all hurricanes since 1851 occurring in the month.
Over the weekend, Hurricane Earl strengthened to category 4 on the
Saffir-Simpson hurricane wind scale.
